Formula 1 returns to Melbourne after a two-year hiatus, and of course the Australian Grand Prix wants it to be a real motorsport celebration.
The weekend’s schedule mainly features races of the highly popular Supercars body series in Australia – in total there are four 20-lap sprints scheduled these days, the first of which is scheduled for Friday.
But driving these powerful 650hp machines at Albert Park is not just for the regular drivers in the series: Fernando Alonso and Sergio Pérez will have the same experience today.
The two-time world champion will drive a Trickford Racing Ford Mustang driven by local driver Thomas Rundle in Supercars. By the way, of the past world champions only Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button could drive such cars, but that was a long time ago, in 2011-2012.
Sergio Pérez will test Ampol Racing’s spare car, which will be the Holden Commodor. Incidentally, the last Formula 1 driver to gain experience driving Supercars was Daniel Ricciardo: in 2019 he drove a Nissan Altima with Rick Kelly.
Demonstration races with the participation of Formula 1 stars behind the wheel of a technique that is unusual for them will be held late in the evening today.
