Charlie Wurz leads the New Zealand Formula Regional Oceania series after two second round wins at Teretong this weekend.
A week ago he started his performance in this winter championship with two podiums, and now he has achieved his first success and, having won two of the three races, is leading the personal standings of the series. He is 24 points ahead of New Zealand rider Callum Hedge.
Hedge started Saturday’s race from pole, but Wurz, who started from second position, immediately got ahead of him and took the lead after a few corners. Callum continued to follow Charlie closely, but the son of a former Formula 1 driver and 24 Hours of Le Mans winner managed to take the race to victory.
In accordance with series regulations, a reverse grid is used in race two, and Hedge distinguished himself on Sunday morning, starting from 7th position in mixed weather, but managed to break ahead and cross the finish line in first place 6 seconds ahead of the nearest pursuer.
Wurz took 4th place, after which he returned confidently in the day’s race, which is considered the most important and lasts 30 laps: he started from pole position and relinquished the lead to no one until the finish. Second place was taken by the same Callum Hedge.
“One can only rejoice at such results,” said Charlie, as he concluded the Sunday program. “We started well, I knew that was the most important thing. Callum is very fast today and I may have missed some speed compared to yesterday, and this has yet to be resolved.
I didn’t know how the start would go, but everything turned out fine. Admittedly, the rubber was gradually giving up, so I had to look closely in the mirrors and monitor Callum’s actions.
The third stage of the series takes place in a week’s time at the Chris Amon circuit, located near the town of Fielding in New Zealand’s North Island.
