In Monaco, Esteban Ocon was given a five-second time penalty for colliding with Lewis Hamilton in the first corner. As a result, the Alpine driver moved from ninth to twelfth in the final standings, losing earned points.
After the finish, Esteban shared his conversation with the stewards, who assured him that if a similar incident had happened last year, the rider would not have been fined. However, from this season onward, the stewards will be guided by the new rules approved by the GPDA Drivers Association to evaluate such incidents.
“This penalty ruined everything, so I’m very disappointed,” said Esteban Ocon after the race. – The stewards told me that if this happened last year it would be recognized as a racing incident. This year, such incidents are no longer treated as racing incidents.
It turns out that at the GPDA we have agreed that in situations where the front wing is parallel to the steering wheel, the opponent must leave room. However, I don’t remember us agreeing on that.
In that corner I just finished the inner section, it was wet inside and Lewis was on faster tires. In addition, all overtakes, which were done in one way or another in Monaco in previous years, took place with contact or departure from the track. Yes Lewis and I fought hard, there was a bit of contact between our cars but this should have been treated as a racing incident.
