Brooks: Building a new McLaren car is going smoothly

The first start of the engine of a new car is a special moment, because, on the one hand, it marks the end of an important stage in the work of the whole team, and on the other hand, the most important begins after that.

We talked about this event happening at McLaren the day before. Among the team leaders and staff present at the Woking base at the time was Oscar Piastri for the first time, who worked on the simulator yesterday.

Jonathan Brooks is responsible for assembling the new machine, all parts, assemblies, assemblies and hydraulic systems. He has been with McLaren for 24 years and has experienced many such moments in that time.

“This is the birth of a new car and the start of a new season,” he said. “It is at this point that the machine comes to life, and it is the culmination of the efforts of many people who have worked for many months and sometimes even years – it all depends on the kind of teamwork they do.

This is an important moment for the entire team base staff, so everyone wants to witness it, everyone wants to hear the engine start for the first time. The preparation for this is a long process and all departments of the team are involved. We must check everything, and even before mounting this or that node on the machine, we must make sure that it is in order. And when everything is assembled, starting the engine confirms that everything is working as it should.

If the launch goes well, everything is going according to plan and that’s a good sign. The creation of the 2023 car is going very smoothly, but last year it was a bit more difficult for all teams, because Formula 1 switched to a new technical regulation, and the cars became more difficult. But now we already know what we are dealing with.

So far there are no special problems, we are just solving various minor problems. But there is still a lot of work ahead of us, we have a very extensive program to run, because until the presentation of the MCL37 we will receive several new parts to be installed on the car.
