Charles Leclerc: I’m very sorry

After the finish of the Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari’s press service published the team drivers’ traditional comments, but in the case of Charles Leclerc, this time they were much shorter than usual. He is understandable, because he had every chance to win, but in the end Charles only finished fourth.

Charles Leclerc: “I’ll be brief, because I’m obviously very upset. It’s a shame because Monaco is my home track and in the beginning everything went great, we were very fast in the rain and it looked like it was the hardest part of the race because in such conditions it was easy to make a mistake to make.

So everything was fine, but what happened next is something the team has to analyze and I don’t want to comment on anything else. But again, I’m very sorry.”

Unlike his partner, Carlos Sainz did not switch to intermediate tires and limited himself to a single pit stop on lap 21, where slicks were immediately placed on his car. The Spaniard had a chance to take the lead, but on exit from the pits he got stuck behind slow Williams Nicholas Latifi, who wouldn’t let him through the tunnel.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez managed to make his second pit stop and return to the track for Ferrari.

“We missed the win because Sergio put in a great lap before going to the pits,” Sainz explained. – We have to give him credit, he is a great racer and deserved this win. In addition, we were on the exit circle of the pits behind Latifi, who was trailing the circle, who had no way of warming up the hard tires.

When I radioed with the team, I didn’t hide that I was upset, knowing that Sergio was able to show excellent speed on the way to the pit stop, while I drove the lap very badly because of the traffic.

If I had gone to the pit stop one lap earlier or later I might have been in a different position, but after the rain it was very difficult to calculate how long the pit stop would last because the asphalt in the pit lane remained wet and the time, the time it took to get into the pits, was different from the time it took to get back on the track. Overall we were not lucky…”
