Formula E: Wehrlein also wins the second race

The second race of the double weekend in Saudi Arabia was calmer than the day before – the asphalt was covered with used rubber, grip had improved and the drivers studied the track’s characteristics and determined the best strategy.

The joining of forces at the start also turned out to be different. Saturday’s qualifying was won by Jake Hughes, tenth ahead of Jaguar’s Mitch Evans and thus McLaren’s first Formula E pole. René Rast and yesterday’s pole sitter Sebastien Buemi started the race from the second row. But even on narrow streets, such as Ed-Diriya, the results of qualifying in Formula E were not of fundamental importance.

Stat went quietly, but the leader changed – Evans was ahead of Hughes and leading the race. Wehrlein and Mortara regained positions and overtook Buemi. After that, the race went smoothly until the riders activated the attack mode.

Evans fell back to third and decided to increase engine power – and the McLaren racers temporarily led the race, but on the next lap Hughes also drove through the attack zone and passed Evans. Rast, who had activated attack mode, remained the race leader and Wehrlein passed Hughes to move into third.

On lap 14, Wehrlein overtook Evans without a power boost to move up to second and rushed to close the gap on the leading Rust. Pascal activated attack mode and pressured the leader, but René shifted to add power as well, missing Wehrlein, who was leading the race.

Rust failed to attack his compatriot, Pascal managed to break away and was able to add engine power without losing the lead and having a larger supply of battery energy.

Dennis effectively overtook the three drivers to move up to third, and on lap 25 he overtook Rust for second and began to overtake the leading Wehrlein.

On lap 28, after crashing into the barrier, Muller left the safety car. Niko was not injured, but retired in the second race in a row.

After the evacuation of Muller’s car, a restart was announced. Wehrlein held onto the lead with eight laps to go.

Oliver Rowland pitted and retired due to problems with his car.

Four riders in the top ten immediately went into attack mode, but nothing changed in the leading group. Bird pushed Rust for third, but René stayed ahead.

On the added 40th lap, the McLaren drivers ran out of battery, but miraculously managed to keep their positions.

Pascal Wehrlein won the second race in a row and became the leader of the Formula E individual standings. Jake Dennis finished second, René Rast moved up to the third step of the podium.
