Hamilton: Drivers have a lot in common

It is widely believed that Formula 1 drivers cannot be friends, but Lewis Hamilton believes that this is not entirely true…

Lewis Hamilton «In fact, we are much more connected than it seems. But we race in a very competitive environment, a lot of people defend themselves that way. If you want to be ahead of a rider, but outside the track you see him positively, you will never show it. This is a kind of psychological warfare that you wage with yourself – and that often gets in your way.

As an older rider I try to communicate more with young people – they are the future. I am delighted to see the young drivers coming into Formula 1 – some of them very, very talented. I don’t know if it’s because they’re in better conditions than I was when I was a rookie. But I try to deal with them as positively as possible.

Of course, none of them are black, none of them saw what I had, but they faced their own problems and solved them – this deserves respect. I have tried to find like-minded people among them and I am very grateful to those who knelt with me before the start in 2020.”
