If Valtteri Bottas thinks the FIA should not limit freedom of expression to riders, then David Coulthard supports the federation’s decision…
David Coulthard: “Our sport is followed by millions of people around the world, it can be used as a platform to do good. But as athletes, we’re very lucky – we get paid for what others would do for free. It’s like the acceptance speech at the Oscars.
If everyone takes the opportunity to make a political statement, there is no issue that is not important to anyone. So either you have to talk to everyone and about everything, or it’s better not to say anything at all and concentrate on sports.
I understand that there are people who promote freedom of expression and that is all very important, but in our case we are talking about sports competitions, not political debates.”
