Audi increases stake in Sauber Group to 75%

On the eve it was announced that Audi bought a minority stake in Sauber Group, Alfa Romeo’s management team in Formula 1. The official statement did not mention the number of shares acquired, but the German Auto Motor und Sport managed to find out that we were talking about 25% .

The publication claims that Audi plans to conduct several more rounds of share purchases to bring its share of the team to 75% by 2025. The remaining 25% of the shares will remain in the hands of the current majority shareholder of the Sauber Group, Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing.

Audi has ambitious goals in Formula 1, with the German automaker aiming to be competitive within three years of its debut in 2026. Audi will build power plants at the base in Neuburg, while engineers in Switzerland continue to develop and assemble the chassis.

To increase the efficiency of the Sauber Group base in Hinwil, Audi will invest in modernization and recruitment in the coming years. This will be a major challenge for Andreas Seidl, who joined the team from McLaren at the end of last year. Alessandro Alunni Bravi will be responsible for operational work on the track.

Sauber will continue to buy power plants from Ferrari until 2026, but the partnership with the Italian company is gradually being phased out. So after the end of the 2023 season, Alfa Romeo will stop being Sauber’s main sponsor.
