The FIA is a non-profit organization with an elected board, where the president is determined by vote for a four-year term and can only be impeached for gross offences.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been president of the FIA since December 2021, but he is at odds with Formula 1 owners Liberty Media. First talking about frequent disputes, then fundamental disagreements, and recently, after comments on social networks about the possible sale of Formula 1, the President of the FIA received a scathing letter from Formula 1 General Counsel Sasha Woodward Hill, in which he accused of committing actions beyond his authority.
Sulayem’s 20-year-old sexist comments, unearthed in the archives of his personal website, recently hit the press by someone’s hand and the FIA had to make excuses saying they don’t reflect the president’s current position .
German journalist Ralf Bach writes that Liberty Media wants to see former head of the Benetton and BAR teams, David Richards, who has reportedly already given his provisional clearance, as FIA president. The only question is how to end Sulayem’s powers prematurely.
