During the early laps of the race in Monaco, while the safety car was on track, Nicholas Latifi crashed into a hairpin gate and damaged the front wing. The Williams driver said the reason for the departure was not his fault but technical problems with the car.
Nicholas Latifi: We’re trying to figure out exactly what happened in that corner. I know I made no mistakes. I turned the wheel and the car acted like it had a stuck throttle, although it didn’t. The car suddenly accelerated as I turned the wheel. A very strange incident, but it is clear that there was some sort of glitch. Too bad the car got damaged because of this and I rolled back before the race actually started.
I know the problem is definitely not with the pedal. Something else led to an increase in engine speed and at that point I turned into a passenger. The car accelerated even though I hadn’t stepped on the accelerator. I don’t know what happened, but it’s very strange.”
