First F1 Academy member named

Late last year, Formula 1 announced the launch of the F1 Academy women’s series to develop and prepare young racers for the transition to more serious championships, including the W Series, Formula 3, Formula 2 and Formula 1. Five teams will compete in the new championship – ART Grand Prix, Campos, Carlin, MP Motorsport and Prema – will field three cars each.

Today the organizers announced the name of the first participant. She became 25-year-old Swiss Lena Buhler, who will compete for the ART Grand Prix.

Buhler spent a season in karting before starting her Formula 4 career in Spanish Formula 4 in 2020. She scored 23 points and finished 15th at the end of the season. In 2021 she took part in the European Formula Regional without scoring a single point.

There were no high-profile successes in 2022 either – Lena drove two stages in the European Formula Regional and finished 26th in only one race. She also competed in six races in the Asian Formula Regional last season, where her best result was twelfth at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Lena Buhler: “I am very happy to be driving in the first season of the F1 Academy and even with a team like ART Grand Prix. There’s a big challenge for me and the team because we have a lot to learn about this championship, but I’m looking forward to figuring it all out.

This will be my fourth season in motorsport, so I still have a lot to learn, but I am ready to give 100% physically and mentally to justify the trust of ART Grand Prix and my partners, without whose support this transition would not be possible been possible.”
