Favourite. Chapter 16 Part 2
After the match. Marcel Reed
– Since we have reliably determined that Marcel moved on the side of the road, in this case there is no violation of his actions and cannot be. Competition rules only prohibit movement in the opposite direction directly along the track. Not a word about the edge. Section eight. Point four. Member six. I have everything, gentlemen.
Ronald exhaled, triumphantly looked around the audience, reached for a bottle of water and without ceremony kissed directly on the neck.
A respectable, dignified man of old age, the head of the judiciary, did not say a word, but mostly frowned and twitched his luxurious gray mustache.
“Actually, the spirit of the rules implies every move against the move,” the judge on the right cautiously observed – a polished gentleman with an impressive belly.
“There is clearly a gap in the rules”, draws the left right, a melancholic man tall as a pole.
“Thank you, Mr. Powell, for your valuable comments, and you, Mr. Reid, for detailed explanations,” the Chief Justice finally said. We need to consult to make a final decision.
And he stared sternly at the pilots, they didn’t have to beg long, and they immediately rolled out of the jury’s tent. They pushed their way through the tight cordon of journalists and onlookers anxious to know the end result, and stepped aside. Ronald took out cigarettes.
“Gimme one too,” Neville said.
– You stopped a long time ago.
– Of worries.
For a while they both blew blue smoke in silence, Neville being the first to break the silence.
– Well, why did you climb? he asked sadly.
“I can’t stand injustice”, Ronald shrugged.
– Do you think we would not have decided with the judges?
– I doubt. Can you tell me better why it took you so long to drive? No one would have noticed a few feet away.
– There is no other way to turn around, the track went uphill.
– I think I convinced these bureaucrats, at least made them think.
– But it turns out we were cunning – I broke the rules.
– In whom are you so honest? You have not created a dangerous situation.
– But in fact there was a violation …
– Never mind, you can go crazy in this arrangement.
“I didn’t know you had such talents. Where does the meticulous knowledge of paragraphs come from? You don’t take newspapers. And the precepts are still the Talmud.
– I had a similar experience. Happy. And so, who knows what pitfalls there are, the judges themselves haven’t really read the rules. So a big thank you from you.
How will your strict boss react?
– What is the difference?
– You’re going to stand on your head…
– What will they do to me, the leader of the general classification?
‘You are a desperate boy.
– So we’re racers, not accountants. We don’t like others.
– Thank you.
Neville squeezed Ronald’s hand tightly.
“Do you cuddle, lords of the English?” – breathed almost ringing with anger voice.
Piero Carbone himself. Angry and confused after his failure, as he conceded certain victory through the fault of the team. And he doesn’t seem to be completely sober.
“What’s the tone, Pierrot?” asked Ronald angrily.
Do you want to share the title? the Italian asked unkindly.
“That’s crazy,” Ronald snapped. “I just try to play fair.
– To the extent that it was useful to testify against a competitor?! Piero pressed.
“You’re too excited,” Neville tried to reason softly with Carbone.
– And in the principality! Before the finish! You didn’t catch up with Reid! cried the Italian angrily.
– And what does this have to do with it? Ronald was surprised.
“Now I’m not sure,” Pierrot rasped. – Who knows, you might suddenly split the prize money in half.
“Calm down,” Ronald smiled.
Do you want to win the public’s love? Carbon screamed.
– What?
“They still love Reed more, and you’re always second to them.
Lunge partner, it seems, hit the target, Ronald was already turning gray with anger.
“That’s an exaggeration,” Neville said firmly. I’m ready to talk to you later.
What should I talk to you about? Do you think I don’t see anything? — and Carbone quickly retreated.
“You don’t think I did it in public, do you?” Ronald looked at Marcel indignantly.
– Come on…
“To be honest, your popularity makes me angry sometimes, but I would never do such a cheap trick.
– Heap. I don’t need the winner’s mercy – Neville tried to make a joke of everything.
“You’re a fool, Reed,” Ronald waved him off. Don’t look for subtext. Can’t I help an old comrade?
‘I believe, mate. Popularity is temporary, unlike friendship.
“So do good to your neighbor,” said Ronald sadly. “Only sideways glances in response.
“I told you I could figure it out on my own,” Neville said.
“I know how you’d figure it out, you wouldn’t even protest the results, you’re a gentleman,” Ronald waved him off.
– There won’t be any problems, will there? Knowing your bosses, Piero’s accusations will fall on fertile ground.
Ronald immediately frowned. It seems that he himself was not so sure of the correctness of his noble impulse. The despotic Mario Monetti forgave many things to the leaders – both punctuality, and not the most virtuous way of life, and dubious antics, but he put the interests of the team above all else, and he will not be greeted who will act to the contrary.
“You can’t change anything now”, Ronald sighed. “It’s not in my nature to regret what I’ve done. Hope you would do the same.
– Do not doubt.
After an hour-long meeting, taking into account the testimonials, the judges decided that Neville Reed did not break the rules of the competition, and returned him his second place. In addition, the Briton received a point for the fastest lap. And now, in three stages, Neville was eleven points behind Ronald. The intrigue continued. A failed race for one of the contenders can tip the winning chalice in favor of the other. The whole battle is still ahead.
