French racing driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille has died at the age of 80. He competed in Formula One from 1975 to 1979, driving 49 Grand Prix cars for Williams, Surtees, Tyrrell, Renault and Ligier, taking two wins and six poles.
He was best known for his cooperation with the factory team of the Renault concern, it was he who opened the score for victories in cars of this brand – it was the French Grand Prix in 1979.
“Alpine F1 is incredibly saddened by the news of Jean-Pierre Jabuy’s passing,” the team said in a statement. “He was a true racer, distinguished by a modest character, was an excellent engineer and one of the pioneers of our sport.
One of the first in 1977, he started Renault’s journey in Formula 1, and in 1979 he gave Renault its first victory. His determination and drive to succeed inspired many, qualities that remain central to the Alpine team to this day.
Thanks to Jean-Pierre and his legacy, we have reached the current level. We would like to express our sincere condolences to his family and close friends.”
