Speaking to the press after the presentation of Red Bull Racing yesterday, Sergio Perez said he would not put his personal interests above the interests of the team and promised to work with his partner as efficiently as possible.
At the end of last year, the relationship between Max Verstappen and Sergio became somewhat complicated when the Dutchman refused to let his partner go ahead to earn extra points during the Brazilian Grand Prix. As a result, Perez had to settle for third in the championship, as he could not stay ahead of Charles Leclerc.
In New York, the Mexican driver assured that the team’s interests are most important to him: “I will try to exploit the full potential of the car. This is the main goal we pursue to achieve the desired results. Of course we have to work together as one team, even if both drivers want to take the championship title.
We have to find the right compromise, but the interests of the team always come first. Since we have very strong rivals, we really have to rely on effective interaction with each other. The strategic objectives are clear: we want to unleash the full potential of the RB19 and expect to have another good car this year.
How good it will be will become apparent when compared to rivals’ engineering, as we can’t yet say what they’ll achieve. But we will do our best and hope the car is fast enough to fight for the wins. We will find out about the joining of forces when we start working on the track in Bahrain.
