With the arrival of Oscar Piastri, who became Lando Norris’ new team-mate, McLaren had high expectations and even decided to dedicate a separate 5-minute video to the Australian’s first day at the team’s base in Woking.
We see Oscar appear at the gate, how the security guard gives him a pass, a guide to the McLaren Technology Center, a phone, tablet and keys to a brand new McLaren Artura. Now this impressive red sports car will be for his personal use.
With that, Piastri drove just a few hundred yards from the entrance to the entrance to the MTC, and the first person he met was… Bruce McLaren. Not the company founder himself, of course, but his bronze statue, which Oscar politely greeted with the words: “I am starting my journey with McLaren in a historic year: the team is celebrating the 60th anniversary of racing, and this is especially important for me.”
The film then tells how that day went, with Oscar commenting on the key moments, such as how he got to know the employees of different departments of the team. At the same time, he emphasizes that the reception was so warm that he immediately felt at home.
Then he had to address the whole team with a word of welcome: according to Oscar, he was a little nervous, but he was more or less coping. Interestingly, on that day, arriving at the McLaren base, he signed the FIA super license, which gives the right to participate in Formula 1.
After that, Piastri started working on the simulator, which became one of the most important events for him. However, since it was the very first day in Woking, everything became important in its own way – which is just a conversation with the engineers, devoted to his preferences for the location of the seat, pedals and everything else that is in the cockpit.
Of course he was invited to his office and Zach Brown, CEO of McLaren, his current boss. Asked by Brown about the goals for 2023, Oscar replied: “It sounds a bit standard, but I will try to learn everything I can. If we manage to show good results during the season, it will be a bonus. “
Zack Brown, responding to his words, made it clear that you should not be modest, but immediately think about the first podium – he hopes that his new rider will finish in the top three soon enough. And in order to increase interest in a good result, Piastri suggested that he himself choose a special reward for future achievements, and promised to think about it.
And after that, Oscar called his mother and reported that his first day in Woking had gone well, although the food at the McLaren base is not as good as at home …
