In November, the Bonhams auction house in Abu Dhabi will hold an auction during the race weekend where the most attractive lot is likely to be the historic car Lotus Type 79, which Mario Andretti won the championship in 1978.
The unique car, chassis number 79/4, is the car in which the American driver won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on the last weekend in August and finished sixth at Monza two weeks later, effectively securing the title. The Lotus team then won the Constructors’ Championship ahead of schedule, but unfortunately these achievements were overshadowed by the death of Andretti’s partner Ronnie Peterson.
The car has an impressive estimate: according to the calculations of the auction organizers, it can be sold for $ 6.5 – 9.5 million.
The Lotus 79 made its debut at the Belgian round of the World Championship, and in the 1978 season alone, Andretti and Peterson, speaking on such machines, won 10 poles and took six victories.
The auction in Abu Dhabi will be Bonhams’ first collaboration with the Paddock Club and will be broadcast live on F1TV.
