Lawson: Super Formula is one of the milestones on the road to Formula 1

Liam Lawson is a long-time member of the Red Bull youth program and will make his Japanese Super Formula debut in 2023 after two seasons in F2. At the same time, the 20-year-old New Zealand driver does not believe that such a career change will reduce his chances of a move to Formula 1 in the future.

“Super Formula is also one of the milestones on the road to Formula 1,” Liam told Speedcafe. – I think this is a very right move, because the level of rivalry in this series is very high. In addition, the car in the Japanese series is much more similar to the technology of the F1 than to the F2.

I played in Formula 2 for two years and honestly it was very difficult. Last season we finished with confidence (3rd place in the individual competition), but it didn’t work out the way we wanted, so I’m glad I took on a new challenge. I will continue to live in the UK, in Milton Keynes, to be closer to our Formula 2 team’s base. I want to continue to participate as actively as possible in their work, and this means I will have to fly more planes!

Liam also believes his partnership with Red Bull Racing will not change even after the return of Daniel Ricciardo to the team, who became another reserve driver.

“It doesn’t change anything for me,” Lawson said. – I have a good relationship with Daniel and I am actually very happy that we are now going to work closely together. It’s great that he returned to Red Bull, but we are in a different phase of our career. I intend to focus on getting good results in Super Formula and then new opportunities may open up for me.”

The season in the Japanese series will start in early April, with the first leg being held at Fuji Speedway from April 7-9.

Pierre Gasly was once one of the Red Bull drivers in Super Formula and became series vice-champion at the end of the 2017 season, before making his debut in Formula 1 in 2018 as part of Toro Rosso. It must be assumed that Lawson hopes to somewhat repeat the path of his older comrade, who is already playing for Alpine F1 this year.
