Mercedes completes bench testing of W14

At Mercedes, as with other Formula 1 teams, they are preparing for the season, but before the new car is officially presented and sent to Bahrain for testing, all its systems, components and assemblies undergo an extensive and very thorough control based on the team.

Engineer Jack Miszewski-Wall is one of those involved in this work, as he works in the test bench department.

“We had a lot to do in January,” he said. – Our main task is to ensure that the car, when it first enters the track, operates as reliably as possible. Since we don’t have time to test on the track in winter, the biggest burden falls on our department.

We have the ability to check all the systems of the machine: brakes, transmission, power plant, cooling system are tested on the stands, and we also separately test the power plant and cooling system.

This allows you to spot any problems before the machine hits the track. So when track testing begins, the team can fully focus on working on efficiency and speed, and not worry about reliability.

That is why we will see the car in fully assembled form for the first time in February, after which it will undergo an initial break-in period, and this is also a very exciting moment. And then our Bench Testing department starts a support program as we help the race crew get the most out of the new car as the season progresses.”
