At the presentation of the 2023 car C43, Guanyu Zhou was in a good mood, he smiled very sincerely and even joked. But overall, the Chinese driver is in a very serious mood ahead of his second season in Formula 1.
Guanyu Zhou: “Newcomers to Formula 1 will always have a very difficult test and I have experienced many different situations, I had both successes and failures. In general I am happy with what we achieved in the first season, but of course expectations are already higher this year.
I want to finish in the top ten more often to earn points for the team and myself and move up to higher positions. So far 8th remains my best result, and if I can break into the top six this year it will be great. In addition, it is necessary to go to the finals of qualifications more often.
I think the new car will allow this, but since the rivalry in the middle of the pack promises to be very intense, everything will depend on many nuances. The main thing is to make fewer mistakes, perform more consistently and then all efforts will pay off.
Last year in testing in Bahrain and during the first races I was very nervous, but now I have a more relaxed mood. Therefore, it will be easier for me to deal with difficulties when I get back on the same tracks, because I already have a completely different mental attitude.
In winter, I tried to relax as much as possible, completely disconnect from work, so I had a great time in China, where I had not been for two years, and enjoyed talking with relatives and friends. I’m better prepared for the season than ever before because when I started training in mid-January I felt I did it with more desire, I want to put in more effort because after such a wonderful vacation, it’s time to get back on to go to work.
When asked about a less serious topic, Zhou shared the love of coffee that Valtteri Bottas, his partner, had, and cheerfully replied, “Imagine yes! For the past four or five years I haven’t made any coffee at all, and now I do it almost every day, especially on race weekends.
During the races Valtteri treated me to coffee that he makes, and frankly he makes a really nice drink, but I still don’t drink as much coffee as he does. But coffee really helps me wake up and focus!”
