Alfa Romeo became the first team in the championship to show images of a real car in 2023 and demonstrate their C43 live during the presentation, although it was only a show car.
According to Alfa Romeo technical director Jean Monchaux, he and his team have focused on upgrading the rear of the car, including the rear suspension, plus changes to the gearbox housing. Side pontoons can also be seen on the C43, reminiscent of this area on last year’s Red Bull Racing car. However, Monchaux emphasized that the changes affected only a few parts of the chassis and that the C43 is an evolution of the previous model.
Jean Monchaux: “We focused particularly on the rear of the car, where we wanted to take a bold approach and take the next step in terms of modernization. This opened the way for us to execute on a lot of other decisions that we couldn’t execute last year.
The concept we followed in 2022 kind of reached a plateau and in order to find new efficiency reserves we had to make all these changes. We did it very seriously, because it was necessary to recreate rather large and complex parts of the machine. Since our efforts were mainly focused on the rear of the car, we will be working on modernizing the front during the season.
We have followed how the technical regulations have changed over the last season and we had to admit that there are better solutions, especially those related to how the airflow to the diffuser and in the area between the rear tires and the body of the car. But since last year’s decisions related to the architecture of the chassis, we were deadlocked.
In general, there are no revolutionary changes in the new car and we have only applied a solution similar to what we saw on our rivals last year, but we could not implement it without major changes to the chassis.
As far as we understand, we managed to fix some weaknesses related to aerodynamics, and the efficiency of the car at high speeds has increased significantly, thanks to new fuselage elements and a newly organized bottom area in the rear wheel area.
You can say that the C43 is my favorite child, its birth was very successful and we hope that the car will enable the team drivers to regularly compete for top ten places.
