FIA chief refused to directly control ‘Formula 1’ – media

The president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Mohammed bin Sulayem, has decided to relinquish direct control over Formula 1, according to the Daily Mail.

The UAE official informed the leaders of the F-1 teams in a letter. At the same time, Ben Sulayem plans to keep the position of FIA boss.

“My stated goal was to be a non-executive chairman through the hiring of a professional management team, a process that is now largely complete. Therefore, from now on, you will be in daily contact on all matters related in F-1 with Nicolas (Tombasis, FIA Formula Series director) and his team, while I will focus on strategic matters, the 61-year-old wrote in a letter bin Sulayem.

He had previously been criticized for saying some 20 years ago that he “didn’t like women who thought they were smarter than men”. Additionally, in January he called $20 billion an inflated price tag for Formula 1.

Ben Sulayem will take the helm of the FIA in 2021, succeeding Frenchman Jean Todt.
