Charles Pic, who raced in Formula 1 for Marussia and Caterham in 2012-2013 and now owns the DAMS team, believes she can challenge for the Formula 2 title.
DAMS has a long history, founded in 1988 by Jean-Paul Drio with Rene Arnoux, and has been quite successful for more than two decades in series such as the F3000, GP2 and F2, but in recent years it has stopped doing well, on the best way. Pick hopes the team can return to the old positions, because in 2023 it will have a fairly strong line-up.
The team’s debut was Arthur Leclerc, the younger brother of Charles Leclerc, and DAMS will continue to work with Ayumu Iwasa, a Honda driver and member of the Red Bull youth program. Both have won races and been on the podium in the series they entered last year ie. at F3 and F2.
“I think we’ll be able to fight for the title this year, but we’re not the only ones who will claim it,” said Charles Pic. – There are three or four teams that can win the championship. The level of rivalry will be very high, so let’s see how many points we can earn by the end of the season.
Behind the settling-in period, where I really had to get to know the team and get to know the employees that I didn’t know before. The challenge for 2023 is to perform consistently in all races and always fight for places in the standings.
In Formula 2, there are four or five drivers who can compete for the championship, and Ayumu is quite talented and is one of them, which he proved in 2022. And Charles must make progress as quickly as possible to also fight at the forefront.”
