Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso will continue his career with Aston Martin in the new season. At the presentation of the AMR23 machine, the Spaniard explained what led him to participate in the project.
Fernando Alonso: “The new car looks great, but now you have to make sure it will be fast every race weekend. Can’t wait to get behind the wheel.
I was well received by the team. In recent months I have been in constant contact and in January I already arrived at the base. I worked on the simulator, met new people, looked around the new base, which will be completed in the near future.
A lot is happening in the team and I feel this energy. Last year new people came to the technical department, soon we will have a new wind tunnel, a new rider in the team – everything is great! Like I said, I can’t wait to get behind the wheel.
Why did I decide to join the team? I saw new hires coming to Aston Martin, and this is testament to the team’s high ambitions. The fact that Lawrence Stroll is in charge of the project also played a big role. The best people and the desire to succeed is the right recipe for success in Formula 1. I hope we will achieve it as soon as possible.
First of all, we have to make sure we have a good base for future Aston Martin cars. Last year the team had difficulties in the first half of the season, but they overcame them and had a good second half of the year. Hopefully progress will continue into 2023.
We are firmly on the ground, but we are not satisfied with fourth or second place. Yes, we may not win right away, but we have to make sure that the 2023 car becomes a good basis for future projects.”
