Under the conditions of the “freeze” of power plant regulations, caretakers can only work on improving the reliability of the engine and refining the software. Hywel Thomas, managing director of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, said the team’s engineers have worked hard over the past off-season to ensure that the linear build in 2023 does not affect the reliability of the power plants.
Hywel Thomas: “It is the busiest time of the year for supervisors. We are preparing the latest versions of the software for the start of the season, so we have a lot of work to do. We’ve been able to achieve greater efficiency from the motor through the way we work with it, and this has been possible thanks to software updates.
Realizing that this is our last chance to modernise, we have made every effort to do as much as possible.
At the end of last season, the engines suffered serious damage from the build-up on the straights. The team not only modified the design of the engines, but also the chassis to avoid such problems – we worked together on this problem.
The biggest changes to this year’s power plant were improving reliability. We want to avoid reliability issues in a situation where the straight line starts to sway and the car hits the ground.”
