Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has confirmed that the team has started talks with Lewis Hamilton over a new contract. The current agreement between the driver and Mercedes expires at the end of 2023 and, according to Toto, the parties have enough time to agree on everything.
Toto Wolff: “We have already had the first conversation on the subject of the contract, but I do not want to impose a timetable, because the timetable is not fundamental, neither for him nor for us. We have a whole year ahead of us and we will find the right time.
Lewis is 38 years old, but the age factor will not play a role in a subsequent contract. Just look at how athletes around the world have pushed their limits.
We have always found solutions that reflect Lewis’s importance to the team and the sport. I think Mercedes is the team he wants to drive in. These issues have never been controversial. We are not delaying anything, we have a good point to continue working on. The actual negotiations are not our priority, because we already know that we want to continue.”
