Mick Schumacher will spend the 2023 season as a reservist for Mercedes. The German driver hopes the experience gained will help him race again in 2024 and hinted that other teams have already shown interest in him.
Mick Schumacher: “I have experience driving the current generation of cars and I hope that through the work on the simulator I can help the team improve the W14 and provide appropriate feedback.
It is a privilege for me to be part of Mercedes. It may not be exactly the scenario I wanted, but it’s a great way to get better as a rider. Of course I won’t be able to make direct comparisons to Lewis and George, but I’ll look at their approach to work and flying style and maybe copy something.
My goal is to stay in Formula 1. Of course there are no guarantees, but I’m in a comfortable position because I know I can achieve a lot this year. I’m sure there will be opportunities. Some have already shown interest in me over the winter, so the situation is developing. In the coming weeks or months we will understand when the negotiations will start.”
Mick added that he does not intend to combine work at Mercedes with achievements in other racing series: “During the winter I drove a Formula 3 car. Now I am in better shape than ever and I don’t want to lose it.
Formula 1 has a very busy calendar so I will only participate in a few kart races as this is the best Formula 1 option out there.”
