Alpine F1 CTO Matt Harman is optimistic about the start of the new season…
Q: How has the A523 changed from last year’s car?
Matt Harmon: Almost everything about the car has changed. We redesigned the front and rear suspension, made the front wing and diffuser more efficient, modified the size and location of the heat sink to complement the improved body concept, and significantly improved the efficiency of the rear wing.
Q: When did development of the A523 begin?
Matt Harmon: Quite a long time ago, in November 2021, even before the appearance of last year’s A522. We have collected a huge amount of data to improve the performance of various systems. The aim was to assess the big picture, identify concepts for the future and possible ways to improve efficiency.
As I said, the A523 is seriously different from the A522 because of the experience the team has gained with the new regulations.
Q: Last year the team made significant progress in working with the car during the season. What is the plan for this season?
Matt Harmon: We are really pleased with the progress of the car over the past year and want to build on this success. We have set up a well-structured plan to regularly update the car this season.
Question: Which work phases have you already gone through with the A523?
Matt Harmon: The A523 was fully homologated before Christmas – a fantastic achievement for the whole team. In the third week of the year, we used our test center in Viri to test the power train installed on the machine to evaluate the performance of the transmission. We are very happy with the distance we have been able to cover on test benches. We are starting the season with more confidence in certain aspects of our project.
