We recently quoted Fernando Alonso, this year’s Aston Martin F1 driver, as saying that this team attracts him with his desire to win, while the teams he spoke to before have been unhappy with insufficient ambitions.
This couldn’t help but hurt Otmar Szafnauer, head of the Alpine team, with whom the two-time world champion had worked for the past two years, and she finished 4th in the Constructors’ Championship last season, ahead of McLaren.
“I think when we got 4th place, as far as I remember, Fernando was just as happy as everyone in the team,” said Safnauer. – If you were fifth last year, then your next task is to climb to the 4th line in the team standings, and this is not so easy to do.
To do this, we had to beat McLaren, and this team has a huge track record and a rich collection of sporting trophies. In my opinion, if you set a goal to get into the top four and finish in 4th place, not fifth place, then this success is worth celebrating. And if you say: “We have completed the task and are going to celebrate”, then there is nothing to be ashamed of.
And if we can get closer to the third line of the team standings in 2023 than last year, then I will celebrate that too. If we continue to close our gap, it means we are making progress. But if you set unrealistic goals for yourself, and your entire organization understands that they will not be achieved anyway, then that will have the opposite effect.
We race to win, but at the same time we have to be realistic. Incidentally, I personally prefer to celebrate 4th place rather than seventh!”
In 2022, the team Alonso joined finished the season in 7th place in the Constructors’ Championship.
