Sebastian Montoya, the son of former Formula 1 driver Juan-Pablo Montoya, was accepted into Red Bull’s youth program this year and will make his debut season in Formula 3 with the Hitech Grand Prix team.
But in winter, the 17-year-old racer took part in the Formula Regional Middle East (FRME) and did not cope with this task in the best way: in the stages of the series he could not rise above 6th place, and in the end finished he is only on the 21st line of the personal classification and he only managed 12 points in 15 races.
Last week was especially busy for him, as Sebastian also took part in the official Formula 3 tests in Bahrain, after which he spent three races in the FRME finals over the weekend.
“It was a very interesting week, my participation in the FRME Championship ended,” said Montoya Jr. after the season finale, held at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. – It was good training, especially when I had to switch to another car after the F3 tests and adapt quickly.
I think we did well in the first part of qualifying, but in the second part I made a few mistakes, so the result was not perfect.”
At the same time, Sebastian was 15th in the first session, although this remained his best qualifying result in the winter series. In the first two races of the weekend he took 12th and 16th place and in the third he did not finish for technical reasons. And yet, despite the insignificant results, he also sees some positive aspects: “In general, this championship did not go the way we wanted, but in terms of study I gained useful experience.
I had the opportunity to improve my piloting skills, work on mental preparation, improve my physical shape and just get into the right rhythm for the Formula 3 season. team, have learned the necessary theoretical knowledge, and understand how I should be the approach to work the coming season”.
Montoya finished 13th in the F3 final in Bahrain, 0.838 seconds behind the leader, but completed 175 laps, more than any other driver.
