1996 world champion Damon Hill believes Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton is overwhelmed with ambition and the desire to clinch his eighth career title before the start of the new season.
Damon Hill: “Lewis is already thinking about retirement because he is 38 years old and he said he is one of the oldest drivers. Everyone knows it’s impossible to continue a career forever, but Lewis is in great shape and dedicated to his job.
After so many years in the sport it can be mentally difficult to force yourself to get on a plane, check into a hotel and get to the track when you know the car isn’t competitive enough. The power of the machine is the main issue. If Lewis gets a car that can win, he will stay and fight. Otherwise it will be harder for him to think about the long term.
A rider needs an incentive in the form of a carrot, and the title is a very good carrot. If Lewis wins his eighth title, he will become the most successful driver of all time – that’s just a huge carrot. I think Hamilton has already recovered from not winning the title in Abu Dhabi and is now determined to win it back. I think he is full of ambition.”
