The Grand Prix of Qatar will be held at the Losail circuit for the second time this year and a sprint will also take place on Saturday, and a large-scale renovation is now in full swing.
Stefano Domenicali, president of Formula 1, visited Qatar yesterday, together with MotoGP promoter Carmelo Espeleta, and what he saw made a good impression on them.
The 5,380km 16-corner circuit opened in autumn 2004 and has hosted regular MotoGP events ever since.
Representatives from two of the world’s leading car and motorcycle racing series were presented by Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Al Mannai, President of the Qatar Motorsport Federation, the organization that acts as the promoter of all races taking place at Losail Circuit.
Domenicali and Espelet presented plans for the reconstruction of the circuit and its infrastructure, including the complete replacement of the asphalt pavement and curbs, the construction of a new drainage system, the modernization of fences, pit lane and grandstands, the organization of new parking lots and other works . The implementation of these plans has already started and the distinguished guests were assured that everything would be ready on time.
The Qatar Grand Prix will be held from October 6-8 and the MotoGP stage would take place at the track in November. An interesting fact: once the construction of Losail International Circuit cost $ 58 million, and now the reconstruction project is estimated at 350 million euros.
But the Qatari side signed a long-term contract for the Grand Prix, designed for 10 years, so all the investments should pay off. After the reconstruction, Losail’s infrastructure will be in no way inferior to impressive structures such as Yas Marina, race tracks in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
