Indian team Mahindra withdrew from today’s race in Cape Town. This is due to the fact that during practice on the new city circuit on Lucas di Grassi’s car, the rear suspension broke and as the investigation into the causes of the problem continues, it was decided for safety reasons not to take part in either qualifying or the race.
Customer team ABT Cupra, which also uses Mahindra’s M9Electro chassis, has also withdrawn from the South African round of the World Electric Car Championship.
“Mahindra Racing confirms that it will not participate in qualifying and the race in Cape Town due to rear suspension safety concerns,” the team said in a statement. – A detailed study of the suspension components of the Mahindra racing car will be carried out when the team returns to base in the UK.
This decision will also affect ABT Cupra, our customer team, who will also not participate in qualifying or the race. Safety considerations regarding riders and teams are always paramount.”
For example, only nine Formula E teams will start in the fifth round of the season in Cape Town and there will be no drivers such as Lucas di Grassi, Oliver Rowland, Nico Müller and Kelvin van der Linde among the participants.
Meanwhile, qualifying in Cape Town was won by Sascha Fenestrasz, a Nissan works team driver who beat Maserati’s Max Günther on pole.
