Oscar Piastri, who spoke to journalists during testing in Bahrain, said he feels no added pressure from last year’s contract disputes between Alpine and McLaren. At the same time, the Australian rider admits that results are expected from him, but he considers this a normal attitude towards any debutant.
Oscar Piastri: “My results in the youth series became my ticket to Formula 1. This is the only fact from my past that I can rely on with confidence. As for last year’s situation with the contract, the issue is extremely clear and closed. I don’t think this aspect affects me in any way.
Of course there is an element of expectation, but the result is always expected from beginners. I am one of twenty Formula 1 drivers, so a lot of attention is inevitable, but I don’t think this attention affects me in any way.
At the moment everything is going great. At the end of last year I spent some time with the team and after the Christmas break I was constantly on base. I was warmly welcomed and every day I got to know the team better. Now I’m happy to get behind the wheel on the track again.
There is no doubt that the move to Formula 1 is a step forward. First of all, I paid attention to the size of the team – it is ten times bigger than the one I played in the junior series. You just need to get used to this feature and remember the names of hundreds of people.
On the other hand, I am one of two drivers in a team who build their own car. I don’t get a finished car from a racing series supplier, I can influence the creation process and make my own contribution – this is a privilege. It’s nice to call yourself a Formula 1 driver.”
