At a press conference on Friday, George Russell cautiously assessed Mercedes’ chances of competing with Red Bull for victory in the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix…
George Russell: “The feel of the car is much better than a year ago – we’ve taken a step in the right direction, but the sport isn’t about feeling, it’s about lap time.
Compared to what it was 12 months ago, things are much better now. A year ago we were worried about the build up of the car and we didn’t know how to deal with it. Now there is no cause for concern. We are about where we would expect at this time of year, although there is always room for improvement.
There are some balance problems, but they are much easier to solve than more fundamental problems. I’m not sure we can put a fight on Red Bull next week – they have a fast and stable car and Max is in great shape. But I don’t see any reason to prevent us from achieving this over the course of the season. Mercedes has always been quick to refine the car during the season, so there is confidence.”
