Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff assures that after a day and a half of testing it is impossible to draw any conclusions about the joining of forces. Wolff rightly noted that teams hide the true potential of their cars, and Mercedes is no exception.
Toto Wolff: “This morning the balance of the car was not optimal and it showed in its behavior on track – it left black marks on the tires when accelerating. It’s hot today and we just haven’t found the right settings for the conditions. But it’s all part of the learning process when working with a new car.
Red Bull and Ferrari are fast, but that’s no surprise. Everyone drives with a different amount of fuel in the tanks, they hide the engine’s operating modes, so it’s impossible to judge who is faster. We also hide our speed a bit.
We will have to wait until the end of the three days of testing to see how the soft tires we want to use this afternoon, when track conditions become more representative for qualifying and the race.
I look forward to the start of the season. Twelve months ago the car left something to be desired, but we still took third place. We are in better shape now and our goal is to fight for the title.”
