Sebastian Vettel risks large fine

During Friday’s first practice at Albert Park, Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin AMR22 suffered an engine failure from Mercedes, with some unusual consequences later on.

The four-time world champion’s car stopped on the third sector of the track, he took a very active part in eliminating the fire that had started, and after the end of the session returned to the pits on a Suzuki scooter borrowed from one of the local marshals.

To applause from the stands, Sebastian drove around the track, waving his hands at the crowd, sometimes without holding the steering wheel, while the helmet on him was incorrectly fitted – pushed up. At the same time, everyone could see that the German driver smiled broadly, and the problem that arose could not spoil his mood.

When Vettel reached the team’s pits, the scooter was returned to the marshals, but it soon became known that the rider would be heavily fined for multiple violations at once.

First, he actually drove without a helmet, and that is already a gross disregard for the traffic rules. Second, he didn’t hold the steering wheel, which is extremely unsafe. Third, although the session has already ended, Sebastian turned out to have gone to the track without permission. The above is sufficient for the stewards to investigate this episode.

However, it is possible that Vettel can avoid a heavy penalty. On the one hand, the regulations clearly state that it is prohibited to enter or leave the track within five minutes of the end of the session. But there’s a caveat: this is still possible with the Marshal’s permission.

Perhaps this was the same case.
