Charles Leclerc came to Melbourne and led the championship by 12 points over teammate Carlos Sainz. At a press conference on Friday, the Ferrari driver rejected suggestions that his results this year were the result of significant personal progress. According to Charles, in previous years he demonstrated a high level, which was invisible due to the lack of competitiveness of the car.
Charles Leclerc: “I don’t like it when they say we’ll see Charles Leclerc version 2.0 this year, because that’s not true. Yes, I made progress, but last year… I never believed in luck, but in 2021 I was unlucky in Monaco and Hungary, where I lost a lot of valuable points. I couldn’t do anything, but those losses had a significant impact on my position in the championship at the end of the season.
If you’re fighting for positions four to seven, no one will notice, even if you’re performing really well. All this only complicates the situation.
I’m probably better now. It’s great that I’ve managed to get back to the fight for wins, but it seems to me that my progress is natural and linear, due to the fact that I’ve been fighting for over a year. There is no big step forward from last year.
The season started not too long ago, so all riders still have a margin to add, but how much everyone can add is the question. I don’t know what areas I have an advantage over my partner in – I think I gain a little bit of everything. Carlos is a very strong driver, so it’s only a matter of time before he gets used to the car.”
