McLaren is fourth in the Constructors’ Championship after seven stages of the season, but team leader Andreas Seidl admits this position is not entirely reliable.
The cars of McLaren, Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Haas and AlphaTauri differ slightly in speed this year. And although the team from Woking now has 59 points, Alfa Romeo is only 17 points behind and Alpine 18 points.
“I wouldn’t say we’re very comfortable because our rivals are strong, they have good racers and fast cars, so the balance of power could still change,” The Race quoted Seidl as saying. – It can be affected by the nature of the track, different weather conditions, the choice of rubber. But our goal is clear: we want to compete for 4th place in the team standings. We have everything you need for this.
We understand that rivals will not stand still, so we must also continue to upgrade the car, which we intend to do, although the pace we have shown in Barcelona and Monaco is of course encouraging.”
Seidl is of course mainly referring to Lando Norris, who finished 8th in Barcelona and 6th in Monaco. Paradoxically, while Daniel Riccardo doesn’t show the results the team expects from him, Daniel Riccardo does offer her some advantage, to some extent his partner’s rear during the races, as the Brit is invariably ahead of him.
However, Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Ocon are not so much inferior to Norris, and with a good combination of circumstances they can overtake him in the coming races. If Ricciardo doesn’t improve, McLaren’s 4th place in the Constructors’ Championship will be in jeopardy, as there is no doubt that Fernando Alonso, for example, is still inferior to the Australian just because the two-time world champion has had bad luck since the start of the season, but now he will try to win back.
Moreover, the threat could come not only from Alfa Romeo and Alpine, but also from Aston Martin, if and if this team can fully exploit the potential of the AMR22 car, which has been significantly upgraded for the Spanish round of the championship.
It’s hard to disagree with Andreas Seidl when he says his team can’t be comfortable and that McLaren needs to make a very serious effort to stay on the 4th line of the Constructors’ Championship.
