VW Group officially confirms interest in Formula 1

At the senior management level of the VW Group, a fundamental decision was taken to participate in Formula 1. The German company’s Supervisory Board approved such a plan, but it will only be implemented after a new technical regulations for motorcycles appears.

After a meeting held in Wolfsburg on Thursday, a brief statement was made, the essence of which is that Porsche and Audi, divisions of the VW Group, “are open to a future entry into Formula 1, and a little later both will brands Additional information.”

Audi has already done this: “From 2026, the company will have the opportunity to demonstrate our principle of “Progress through technology” in the highest category of motorsport.

The decision has not yet been made, we are in the final stages of studying the matter. At the moment, the regulations for 2026 and subsequent years have not yet been published. It will lay the foundation for future changes aimed at making motorsport more environmentally friendly, and this is a condition on which a final decision by Audi will depend.

Audi Sport negotiates directly with the FIA. We will announce our decision as soon as it is made.”

Formula 1 has not yet commented on this.

Reuters, speaking of the VW Group’s supervisory board meeting yesterday, is holding on to the version that Audi is ready to buy the McLaren team for $500 million. However, McLaren Racing CEO Zach Brown stated categorically that the team is not for sale, and negotiations with Audi are very tentative.

At the same time, the German edition of Auto Motor und Sport writes that Audi and McLaren have still not been able to reach an agreement, and now an alliance with Sauber seems the most likely scenario, but Aston Martin is also showing interest in collaborating with the German company.

As for Porsche, this division of the Volkswagen Group is negotiating cooperation with Red Bull Racing, and here everything is more or less clear: we are talking only about the status of supplier of power plants.

Further developments will in any case depend on the new regulations for engines, the transition of which is planned for 2026. The FIA is expected to approve this document in June, but there are still a number of unresolved issues, preventing the regulations from being approved until the autumn.
