Williams’ best result in the second practice session of the Bahrain Grand Prix was Alex Albon’s seventeenth fastest time. Formula 1 debutant Logan Sargent closed the protocol and lost three tenths of a second to his partner.
Alex Albon (17th): “The second practice was much better than the first. We still have work to do, but we are close to rivals. If you look at AlphaTauri and Haas, our race pace is so close to them that we keep fighting. Tomorrow we will see if we can still close the gap.
As this track has a high rate of rubber degradation, race pace is more important than qualifying pace. Overtaking in Bahrain is quite easy, so if your car is faster you can get ahead. That said, when choosing your settings for qualifying, don’t forget about the race.
On Sunday we are waiting for a few unknown things. Reliability at the start of the season is lower than at the end, and some teams will be able to get the most out of the car for rivals. Our car is not the fastest, but if we do our job better than the rest, we can finish higher than our technique allows.”
Logan Sargent (20th): “I had a great experience today. As expected, the temperature dropped towards evening and the car picked up speed. I was impressed with how much traction has increased in the evening session – I need to learn how to make better use of these opportunities.
The third practice takes place in the heat during the day, so the best opportunity to prepare for qualifying was today. In the evening we will analyze the data collected to understand what we can achieve in qualifying. All in all a good first day.”
