The rules prohibit Formula Series drivers from carrying personal items, including mobile phones, into the cockpit. Only FIA homologated items are allowed, but Formula 3 driver Christian Mansell (he is not related to Nigel Mansell) has made an exception in Bahrain.
The fact is that Christian is sick with type 1 diabetes. And in order to control blood sugar levels and avoid shocks in the event of a sharp fall, the stewards, at the request of the Campos team, allowed the rider to take a mobile phone in the cockpit, which monitors the sugar level using an external sensor and transmits it to the coach in the paddock, so that the team can intervene in the event of danger.
The permit is only valid this weekend. Campos is expected to come up with a better solution for Mansell’s blood sugar control at the next round in Australia in early April.
