Fernando Alonso: We will try to fight for the podium

Fernando Alonso showed the fifth fastest time in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver said the gap to the leaders is in line with the team’s expectations and on Sunday he will try to fight with Ferrari and Mercedes for a spot on the podium.

Fernando Alonso (5th): “Thoughts about the post were too optimistic. Our goal was to get to the final with two cars and be in the top five or six. We assumed that we would be five or six tenths behind the Red Bull – and so it happened. We expected such results, so I am very happy.

I believe Aston Martin will be a contender for the title in the future, but it will take some time before we reach this level. Maybe we need a season. We have a basic machine on which to build the future. But in a way it is an unexpected result for everyone to start from fifth place in the first race of the season.

Speed over long distances is the strength of our car. We have a very low degradation of rubber, which has developed historically. In the race we will try to fight for the podium with Ferrari and Mercedes. It sounds incredible now!”
