Haas drivers experienced conflicting emotions after qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Nico Hulkenberg confidently returned to Formula 1 and reached the final, and his teammate Kevin Magnussen stopped the fight in the first session and posted the seventeenth fastest time. The Dane explained his low result by getting into traffic on a decisive attempt.
Nico Hulkenberg (10th): “Unfortunately not everything went perfectly in the final, but I will not let this ruin my mood. I think I did well – I’m happy with my speed and laps.
We saw yesterday that we are fast on one lap, but the real test is in the race. I’m preparing for a tough fight and I’m looking forward to it.”
Kevin Magnussen (17th): “On my second attempt I hit traffic in the last corner. The density of the results turned out to be very high, and I fell a little short of getting into the second part – that’s all.
I was a bit unlucky, but the race isn’t until tomorrow – I’ll try to perform better. We have a lot of work to do and we’ll see how we do the race.”
Gunter Steiner, team leader: “Quite a good day for us. We know what we can do this year and Nico is back fantastic.
However, after the results of the session there are two minuses. Kevin didn’t come out of the first part. Today is not his day, but he knows what he is capable of and is optimistic about the machine’s capabilities, so tomorrow he will try to earn points.
Niko made it to the final, but couldn’t show the result we were counting on. Nevertheless, tenth place at the start is a very nice achievement for us. The whole team has done a fantastic job and all the efforts of last year and the winter are paying off. Good job.”
