The 41-year-old Spaniard started fifth and was able to secure a podium finish in the first stage of the championship with a new team. Alonso finished third, ahead of another Spanish rider, Carlos Sainz of Ferrari, in the fight in the final laps.
Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won the race, Austrian team runner-up Sergio Perez of Mexico finished second.
The next stage of the championship will take place in Saudi Arabia from March 17 to 19.
