Pirelli tire manufacturers brought the softest C5 compound to Melbourne for the first time in the season. The head of the Italian company’s racing division, Mario Isola, summed up Friday’s practice results, noting the high granulation of tires.
Mario Isola: “The day turned out to be an interesting one – for the first time we saw the cars on the updated track configuration and the teams appreciated the rather big difference between Medium and Soft. Given the difference in tire performance, we think this is the right lineup choice for this weekend. In the future, we can repeat this experience by bringing trains to the races through one.
Rubber granulation was observed in both training sessions on Medium and especially on Soft. As this has a direct effect on degradation, wear control will be key to race strategy. Most likely, for the race, the teams will choose the most rigid compositions, and in qualifying they will prefer Soft.
As track conditions will continue to improve this weekend, we haven’t seen the full picture yet, so the information the teams gather in practice three will be important in terms of strategy.
