In qualifying in Bahrain, the Mercedes drivers posted only sixth and seventh fastest times, losing more than half a second to the pole holder, but team principal Toto Wolff believes the Silver Arrows will take the lead back one day.
Toto Wolff: “The gap is quite big, and we could only use one set of tires in the final. This is not at all what we want.
We developed this concept of the car and hoped to fight for pole position today, but that was not possible. And we need to win back this six-tenths of the deficit and more to fight for victory.
Both riders were unable to put in a clean fast lap, but that didn’t change anything. Potentially we could be two cars ahead of Alonso, but the result is what it is.
Lewis assesses the situation in the same way we do. We are very critical of ourselves and what we need to achieve. The machine consists of many ideas and concepts, we consider all possible options with which we can achieve more. All our engineers think about how to do it, we just need to work together.
We will help Lewis win the eighth title. He has four years before Alonso’s age, so we just have to do our job well. Even if I have to push it around the track to win my eighth title, I will do what it takes.
