Max Verstappen: Pole was a pleasant surprise

Max Verstappen won qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix and took the 21st pole position of his career. His teammate Sergio Pérez confirmed Red Bull Racing’s speed by finishing second at the start.

Max Verstappen (1st): “Great birthday present for Dad – I hope he watched the show!

Yesterday we had a rather difficult start to the weekend, and even today I couldn’t find the rhythm. Fortunately, we managed to bring all the parts together in qualifying. Of course I’m happy with the pole and the fact that our team has a fast car again after last year and Sergio will start next to me. It’s great – looking forward to the race.

Changes in the regulations this season should have slowed the car down a bit, but we went faster anyway – that’s nice to see. Over the course of the season, everyone will add noticeably again – this is the beautiful side of Formula 1.

Pole was a pleasant surprise after all the problems that haunted me in training. Usually our car looks better during the races, which is positive. Let’s see what happens in the race.”

Sergio Perez (2nd): “The fight in qualifying turned out to be tough with minimal margins. It was necessary to give everything to take the highest possible starting position. I can’t say I’m completely happy with the balance – it was possible to go tenth faster, but the team is still having a great start to the season.

When preparing the car we paid more attention to race settings, although we understood that this would lead to speed compromises in qualifying. We took such a step that it wasn’t ideal, but I hope it will pay off tomorrow and we will have a very high race pace.”
