McLaren drivers are optimistic about the results of Friday’s practice in Melbourne, as they are already confident in the new MCL36 car and both promise to improve in qualifying.
Daniel Riccardo (10th): “Looks like our car works better on this track – we can only hope the rivals don’t hide their true speed. But the feeling behind the wheel is not bad, the track here is interesting, for example it was nice to conquer the 6th turn earlier, but now it’s made really fast. At its exit you have to use the curb, so driving is a pleasure.
In both sessions we were in the top ten, and let’s hope we can continue on the same footing tomorrow. Most importantly, we are already confident in the car and today we made a noticeable step forward, especially at the start of the second session when we were running on medium hard tyres.
While the soft tires didn’t add much, I still feel like you can go faster. With regard to the actual piloting, it was felt that we were gradually approaching the limit of what was possible. It’s unlikely I can add a second, but over the weekend the speed will pick up.
Lando Norris (8th): “Today is one of the best days of the season. I think we have started training well, the car is well balanced and the team continues to improve the settings, so we are moving in the right direction.
So far the picture is similar to what was in Jeddah, and for us it’s good because we worked normally that weekend. Overall, we’re doing relatively well, but we need to try to add a little more, and this is the task we’ll be solving in preparation for tomorrow’s qualifying.
