Fallows: One of Newey’s traits is his lack of arrogance

The new Aston Martin AMR23 is the first car designed entirely by team technical director Dan Fallows. He has been Adrian Newey’s right-hand man at Red Bull for many years in the past and is keen to bring some of his qualities to the team…

Dan Fallows: “I am one of the lucky few who was lucky enough to work under Adrian and see his methods. It has a very detailed approach to design and development, especially in terms of aerodynamics. This is a truly uncompromising approach, Adrian paid great attention to detail.

One of his qualities that really appealed to me was the lack of any technical arrogance. He was always open to ideas or things that didn’t work or if there were better ideas.

In creating the AMR23, I started from my own vision and encouraged other engineers to speak directly about what they think. Even if you have a very clear idea of what the car will be, it is important to listen to the opinion of others. And if someone offers something better, you should avoid prejudice, whoever it is. This is one of Newey’s strengths, I hope I can act in the same vein.

Due to strict regulatory restrictions, some cars are very similar. But in any regulation there are always many small details that are of great importance. They are not always visible on external examination. In the end, one or more philosophies will remain – we’ll find out soon. After last season, some teams decided to change their approach – and were able to add. They will likely continue to act in the same vein.
